Yucca (Raul Ernesto Gutierrez Garcia) is a cinematographer living in Santa Clara, Cuba—an artist who has always seen the world through a lens and recorder. As a kid, he was one of the first in the town to own a camera and a recorder, capturing life in his beloved alternative bar hangout and documenting his community with an artist's eye. He loved all the bands that played locally but never was a musician beyond his tapping and humming.
In 2022, after losing his partner who moved to Spain, Yucca fell into a dark spiral. What started as venting about Cuba's economic hardships on Facebook became an all-consuming addiction to social media. The more followers and detractors he gained, the deeper he sank into a toxic cycle of online confrontation that was destroying his mental health with hours, days and weeks of screen time. This screen time crowded out any creative work and with hard times there was little work to be found.
With work slow and his life unraveling, Yucca recognized he needed help. Through conversations with a psychologist friend and facing his own withdrawal from social media toxicity, he found an unexpected moment of clarity: watching a rumba band's percussionist improvise with pure joy.
Inspired by online collaborative projects like Playing for Change and Postmodern Jukebox, Yucca channeled his creative energy into something revolutionary: Impro Music Solos (IMS). Armed with just a bike, backpack with his camera, and tripod held together with bungee cords, he began cycling through Santa Clara to find and record local musicians. A project of love and with no income this became the new pastime.
